THE FORECAST LOOKS BRIGHT FOR AUSTRALASIAN CONTEMPORARY DANCE
A sumptuous evening of dance was showcased at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Supercell Festival of Contemporary Dance 2018. ‘Forecast: An Australasian Convergence’ featured four works, from Australia and Singapore.
The night kicked off with ’Cheerleader of Europe By Daniel Kok’ (Singapore) a cabaret style mix of dance, theatre and comedy. Kok’s charismatic and energetic performance centred around the plight of contemporary Europe. His statement was touching and political and his unique way of interacting with the audience was thoroughly entertaining.
Expressions Dance Company (Australia) followed with a percussive piece by Stephanie Lake. The virtuosity and physical stamina of the dancers was featured in this energetically intense performance.
The Crossing by The Farm (Australia) was humorous, emotional and inspirational. Directed and performed by Kayah Guenther and Gavin Webber, it began with a three-minute short film ‘The Battle’ depicting inner conflict and frustration leading into a fuller work where themes of competition, animal instincts and the triumph of the human spirit were experienced. This was a truly magical journey resulting in a standing ovation from the audience.
Finally 'Pure' by T.H.E. Dance Company (Singapore) was a beautiful and stunning exploration of individual and societal relationships. The movement of the dancers was utterly mesmerising, choreographed by Kuik Swee Boon.
Thanks to the Supercell Festival of Contemporary Dance and the Brisbane Powerhouse for a concert where we were not only entertained and enthralled, we were inspired.
